MQ-9 Reaper: The Future of Medium Altitude Drones

The Air Force is in the market for a new medium-altitude drone. MQ-X was canceled in 2012. The Air Force is now in great power competition with its rivals, as detailed in the 2018 National Defense Strategy. In June 2018, the Air Force asked for industry input regarding innovative development practices and digital engineering projects. Many large defense companies responded, but the main feature of the new medium high-altitude drone will not be expensive nor limited in its versatility.

Air Force purchases 3,750 lbs of ordnance

The Air Force has recently purchased three thousand and seven hundred pounds of MQ-9 Reaper ordnance, an order that is likely to grow as demand for drones continues to increase. The Reaper can carry 3,000 pounds of ordnance and can be operated at a distance greater than five miles. Britain and France have purchased similar numbers of Reapers recently, but France has yet to allow the other side to arm its drones.

The Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle is among the most advanced in the world. It can carry up to 3,750 pounds of ordnance and is capable of taking on any size target. France has recently purchased 16 unmanned aircraft from France for $1.5 billion. The deal also involves the production of sensor pods for Block 5 and Block 30 MQ-9 Aircraft and Mobile Ground Control Stations. The contract is due to be signed by April 30, 2023.

It can hunt for targets

The MQ-9 Reaper is a small unmanned aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force to hunt for terrorist targets. The Reaper is on a mission to eliminate a top terrorist leader. This is not possible in the current program.

MQ-9's high fuel efficiency makes it possible to refuel fighter jets. Its mission set may expand in the future to include maritime interdiction, air strike coordination, and combat search and rescue. These capabilities are already useful in new situations. The Reaper may be the next generation fighter-jet.
