Wing drones are a novel type of delivery vehicle that makes use of special unmanned traffic control software to plan routes using terrain and local data. They communicate this information with other aircraft within the area to safely navigate to the customer. Wing drones can switch between helicopter and airplane flight modes thanks to their fixed wings and hover propellers. Walgreens employees will take them to the customer and load them.

Wing will manage a drone delivery center in Dallas-Fort Worth

Wing is now partnering with Walgreens, to bring their drone delivery service in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. The partnership will allow Wing the use of a fulfillment facility in Virginia and Walgreens to load and unload packages in Texas. The partnership will reduce the footprint of both companies and the number required to manage the drone delivery company. A speed bump will make it easier for the drones to reach customers' homes. After the pilot is completed, the companies will continue gathering feedback from the community and testing the technology.

Dallas-Fort Worth's retail location will be the first to utilize a drone delivery service. Wing will work with Hillwood, a local delivery company, to create a drone delivery service at Frisco Station. This partnership is a significant step forward for drone delivery and could lead to similar deployments in other major cities.

Products will be delivered via the Wing app

The drones will have special unmanned traffic management software that will aid in planning the route of delivery using airspace, terrain and local data. This information will be sent to other aircraft in the area to help them safely navigate to the customer. Because the drones have fixed wings and hover propellers they can easily change from helicopter to airplane flight. Once customers place their order, staff will load the drone.

Walgreens and Wing Aviation (a company owned in part by Alphabet) are working together to create the trial program. The companies plan to create a pilot program in Christiansburg (Virginia) where they will explore the possibilities for airborne delivery of wellness and health products. The location was chosen as it is close Virginia Tech University. Since 2016, drone delivery has been being tested in the area. Walgreens and Virginia Tech University have been testing drone delivery since 2016. This partnership could allow Walgreens to take advantage of growing drone delivery markets and increase its revenue, especially when you consider that 78% of the population lives within 5 miles of a Walgreens location.

FedEx will deliver prescriptions

Walgreens pharmacy and FedEx express division have partnered to allow drones delivery prescriptions in Christiansburg for the first-time. Walgreens will benefit from the program to be more competitive and better serve customers. This partnership will also help the pharmacy stay competitive with other large retail chains such as CVS, which launched a prescription delivery service last June. Walgreens could be able to compete with Amazon and other larger retailers like Wing, which have partnered with Wing for healthcare deliveries via drones.

Alphabet developed Wing, an autonomous robotic drone. It is also the parent company for Google and Walgreens. FedEx will use drones for delivery of prescriptions to Virginia businesses and homes. The service will start testing this fall. However, it is still unclear when the service will be offered in other cities. Although it is difficult to predict when or where Walgreens might roll out this service, it is an exciting step towards improving last mile delivery services.

Product orders will be fulfilled within minutes of order placement

Walgreens customers can place orders online or through the mobile app. Walgreens employees receive all incoming orders via tablets. They then find the product on the shelves, wrap it in plastic and attach it to the drone. The product will be delivered to the customer by Wing associates. The drone will deliver the package to the customer and return it to its home base.
